There
are many different approaches to counselling and psychotherapy. At
Concepts we offer the Person-Centred Approach to Counselling, as
originated by Carl Rogers, and also, where appropriate and where
requested, we work with image in a Person-Centred way, as originated
by Liesl Silverstone.
The
Person-Centred Approach:
The Person-Centred approach is
based upon a deep respect for the person and the belief that the
relationship between the counsellor and the client is of primary
importance.
It is the client who knows what hurts and
who has the capacity, within the safety of a therapeutic
relationship, to begin a healing process.
The essential qualities for
creating a safe, supportive and challenging therapeutic environment,
where growth and possible change may take place, include:
a deep acceptance of the
person
a desire to understand the experience
of that person
a commitment to being
genuine in the relationship
These qualities, offered
professionally and consistently, are the central and distinctive
characteristics of the Person-Centred Approach.
Working with image in a
Person-Centred way:
For some people, working with
images in a non-directive, non-interpretive way, can be extremely
rich and spontaneous. Ability to draw is not at all necessary.
Working in a Person-Centred way
with art enables a client to discover the message of the image for
her/himself, thus gaining self-awareness as well as moving towards a
more autonomous way of being. By bringing the Person-Centred
facilitative approach to images expressed in art-form, integration,
healing, and growth can occur.
At Concepts, we can offer both
talking or image therapy, or a combination of the both, depending on
how you wish to work.
